Consumer Health Informatics Engagement Area

Health Literacy explanation

The Center for Knowledge Management (CKM) applies Doctor and computerexpertise in health literacy and learning styles to medical center programs and initiatives, including the translation of complex genetic information to meet the needs of the public. Through federally-funded research studies, CKM has evaluated strategies for enhancing patients’ understanding of health information, such as tailoring information according to health literacy and learning style preferences.  Additionally, CKM develops and maintains tools and resources to help patients manage their care. For interested members of the medical center community, CKM provides consultation and training in translating medical and genetic information for lay audiences and applying best practices in clear communication for the creation of easy-to-understand informed consent documentation.
