Description:
Legal Aid Society provides free legal services for civil cases to people with low income. The Society holds weekly legal clinics during which practicing lawyers are available for consultation and can provide lists of attorneys who perform pro bono work. Through their services, the Legal Aid Clinic provides help with domestic violence cases, financial issues (e.g., food, utilities), family law (e.g., child support, wills), healthcare costs, insurance, social security payments, and renter's rights.

Description:
Meharry Medical College's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences provides medical/clinical inpatient treatment and outpatient support for teens and adults with chemical dependency and those going through detoxification and rehabilitation. Additional mental health and psychiatry services are also available. Group, individual, and family therapy is available. The C.O.P.E. program (Community Outreach Prevention Education) addresses HIV-infected individuals and performs community outreach to raise awareness of the disease.

Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center at Meharry Medical College

The Rainbow Program offers inpatient and outpatient treatment for pregnant or postpartum women trying to overcome drug or alcohol addiction. To supplement the rehabilitation services, the program also provides a multitude of additional service assistance including housing, mental health management, child care, food, clothing, shelter referrals, transportation, and family counseling. The program is particularly sensitive to the needs of minority women who may face cultural and language barriers.

Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center (MWCHC )

The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center provides primary healthcare, dental care, and specialty care such as geriatric and OB/GYN services based on the individual’s ability to pay. Targeting low-income residents, the Center collaborates with Meharry Medical College to bring disease screening to communities. Translation services are offered to facilitate patient care. An onsite pharmacy provides medications for 45-50% less compared to traditional pharmacies. The center provides a social and community service manager that can assist patients and other community members with services including health insurance enrollment, free health and wellness programs, locating rent and utility assistance programs, finding employment, and lifeline cell phone programs.

Mending Hearts

Mending Hearts is a residential recovery community for women who are struggling to maintain shelter as a result of drug or alcohol addiction. The residential program consists of classes that address life skills; topics include self-care, GED/computer/resume classes, Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, financial planning, criminal thinking group and re-entry program, and repairing/building relationships with family.

Mental Health Cooperative (MHC)

Description:
The Mental Health Cooperative takes a holistic approach to treating and supporting individuals with mental illness and behavioral/emotional disorders. MHC treats all age groups; treatment is outpatient-based and includes access to primary care facilities and a pharmacy. Individual, group, and family therapy is offered. Mobile and telephone crisis services are available. MHC also offers substance abuse therapy for individuals with co-existing mental illness. Case Managers at MHC can provide assistance locating resources for housing, budget & financial needs, medical & dental care, employment, education, social support, and transportation options. Youth services include assistance with juvenile justice court.

Metro Action Commission

Description:
Metropolitan Action Commission services include programs to help individuals and families with financial hardships gain economic stability. The Commission offers adult education programs, general equivalency degree (GED) preparation classes, and college application assistance. In addition to training and employment services, the Metropolitan Action Commission provides support for safe housing, including payment with electric and gas bills, rent, mortgage, property taxes, rental deposits, and medical prescriptions, and prescribed food/medical equipment. Also, meals for children are available throughout the year via the “Summer Food Service Program.”
